एक बार एक लकड़हारा, जो एक गाँव में रहता था। वह बहुत ईमानदार व्यक्ति था। एक दिन वह अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से लकड़ी काट रहा था। वह बहुत गर्म दिन था। उसे प्यास लगी और वह नदी में पानी पीने चला गया। उसकी कुल्हाड़ी गलती से उसके हाथ से फिसल कर नदी में जा गिरी। लकड़हारा रोने लगा।
(नदी की देवी ने उसकी पुकार सुनी और उस पर दया की। वह पानी से बाहर आ गई।)

देवी: क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?
लकड़हारा: नहीं, नहीं! यह सोने की कुल्हाड़ी है लेकिन मेरी कुल्हाड़ी लोहे की बनी थी।
(देवी नदी फिर से पानी में चली गई और चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर निकली।)
